Exhibition to celebrate National Nutrition Week inaugurated
9/6/2008 2:49:00 AM

New Delhi, Sep 5 (IANS) A two-day long exhibition on nutrition awareness for women and children was inaugurated at the India Gate lawns Friday.

It is organized by the Ministry of Women and Child Development and the Food and Nutrition Board.

Renuka Chowdhury, Minister of State for Women and Child Development, said the purpose of the exhibition was to create awareness among people about nutritious food and healthy living, during the National Nutrition Week (Sep 1-7).

Chowdhury, addressing the inauguration ceremony, said: 'A majority of Indian women and children are prone to micro-nutrient and calcium deficiency which are not known to many. They are faced with health hazards due to lack of nutrition awareness.'

'Well- nourished children tend to have a higher IQ and better cognitive ability. While medicines are not a solution, nutrition awareness is the only prevention,' she maintained.

Somnath Chatterjee, Speaker Lok Sabha, inaugurated the exhibition, and unveiled the 'Mother and Child Card' - a card which aims at recording nutrition related facts and health concerns of mothers and their infants.

Chatterjee, who has often advocated the cause of health and nutrition, averred that nutrition awareness was essential for sustainable growth in a country where 41 percent of the population is comprised of children.

'Foetal and early childhood malnutrition has lifelong consequences on growth and development of our country. Therefore, investment in child nutrition today will give manifold returns in the future. Lack of access to quality health care and sanitation are impediments,' said Chatterjee

A cultural programme was held that featured folk dances, poetry recitation and songs about nutrition and health.

The exhibition on till Sunday has on display information about women and child health issues, stalls for blood sugar and haemoglobin check up and checking weight of infants and babies.

The exhibition will also daily feature a quiz competition for women, adolescent girls and children, to disseminate information on infant and young feeding practices, nutritious food and hygienic and healthy food habits.
